Sustainable Jersey-Roselle Park
Sustainable Jersey is about being “Green” in many ways for us.
The Sustainable Jersey program has been in effect since 2009. From that time, 447 municipalities have participated and 200 are “certified.” But being a “sustainable community” is not only about being environmentally conscious, but it means adopting best practices for town wide community development. Becoming “Certified” means more grant opportunities for Roselle Park.
From 2009 to 2014, more than $1,600,000 and 221 grants have been awarded municipalities through the State for sustainability projects to make communities more livable, environmentally friendly, and financially supportive.
Although the program has been around since 2009, it was only this year that Council took action to make Roselle Park a Sustainable Jersey Certified Community.
What is Sustainable Jersey?
Sustainable Jersey is a nonprofit organization recognized by the State of New Jersey that provides assistance and financial incentives, such as grants, to help support communities as they institute sustainability programs and policies. Sustainable Jersey is helping communities build a better world for future generations. It’s not just about supporting the environment through municipal efforts to reduce waste, lower our “carbon footprint,” and improve environmental equity, but Sustainable Jersey is also about creating betting public communication between residents and their government and other activities such as creating a supportive arts program. It’s a holistic approach to community development.
How does it work?
Sustainable Jersey offers templates of best practices for communities to adopt. The more we meet these best practices, the higher the certification and more opportunities for funding.
What is Roselle Park doing about becoming Sustainable Jersey Certified?
By appointing a wide cross-section of the community to a “Green Team,” lead by Roselle Park Clean Communities Coordinator, Michele LoManto, Roselle Park is on the way of becoming certified in September of this year and opening up financial, professional, and technical support for our Borough.
As the Council Liaison, I’m proud to have recommended Michele to lead the “Green Team” and work side by side with the many dedicated volunteers committed to our community.
