Transit Village
"Getting More For Roselle Park"
Transit Village:
“The Roselle Park Train Station is the center of public transportation for our community. New Jersey Transit announced that millions will be spent on improving our train station, including a new elevator connected to the platform. How can Roselle Park capitalize on the train and the many bus stops in our community to leverage more money, better development, and marketability for new business and improved housing values? Becoming a Transit Village designated community.”
What is Transit Village?
A New Jersey state designated Transit Village is a municipality that has demonstrated a commitment to revitalizing and redeveloping the area around their transit facilities into compact, mixed use neighborhoods with a residential component. A municipality can be designated a Transit Village only after much of the planning and background work has already been done on the municipal level and the municipality has to apply for the designation to the state after meeting certain criteria.
New Jersey has 33 designated Transit Villages and Roselle Park is in a great position to become the 34th designated Transit Village.
Here is are the six criteria to become a Transit Village:
1. Active redevelopment areas within a ½ mile radius of the train station
2. A Connection of the train station to the downtown/business district
3. Strong connection for pedestrian walkability & bikeability including bike and pedestrian paths
4. Connection to mass transit
5. A strong arts component
6. Open and public spaces
Is Roselle Park qualified to become a Transit Village?
Yes. We are considered a strong candidate by the State of New Jersey Department of Transportation Village task force because we meet the 6 main criteria described above.
How does this help Roselle Park?
Each year, the State sets aside $1,000,000 only for the 33 Transit Villages. Over the years, other town have received grants for downtown improvements and improved pedestrian and bike paths. The Transit Village designation helps us get points towards other grants on the federal and state level, such as Safe Routes to Schools and Transit grants, and increases the value of Roselle Park’s homes and we become more attractive as a town.
Are there any other requirements?
Yes. The application requires that communities applying conduct a “Vision Plan,” which includes participation with members of the community, town leaders, and businesses alike.
Is Roselle Park applying?
Yes. Under my leadership as Council President, Council started the process of applying this year for the Transit Village designation.
If elected as Mayor, I will continue this process. The Transit Village designation is vital to our future prosperity in Roselle Park. I see a transit village designation for Roselle Park as a positive for us and we need to take advantage of this opportunity to improve our town. The fact is 10 years ago, we were not ready for this. We are ready now.
